We spend every day in contact with the world around us, often without realising how much information those points of contact provide.
Our feet meet the ground as we walk, our bodies settle into a chair, and our hands wrap around a steering wheel. They’re ordinary, unnoticeable moments, yet each one quietly helps our nervous system understand where our body is and how it needs to respond.
The spine plays an important role in this constant exchange of movement information. Chiropractic approaches consider how joints contribute to the information the nervous system uses to coordinate movement.
Pressure plays a key role in how our body gathers information from its surroundings.
Specialised receptors in our skin, muscles, joints, and connective tissues continually detect changes in pressure, stretch, and position. Together, they create an ongoing picture of where our body is, how our weight is distributed, and how we’re interacting with the world.
The contact between our feet and the ground is a perfect example. Every step provides information that allows our nervous system to adjust balance, posture, and muscle activity without conscious thought.
Different surfaces also create different patterns of pressure.
Standing on firm ground feels different from standing on soft grass, and sitting on a supportive chair feels different from sinking into a lounge. Even holding a coffee mug or carrying shopping changes how pressure travels through our hands, arms, shoulders, and spine.

For example, if reduced movement through the mid-back affects how the spine absorbs changes in position, stepping off a high kerb may require the knees and ankles to contribute more to maintaining balance.
Maintaining normal joint movement helps preserve the variety of information available to the nervous system.
